Bear B.U.M. was quite excited to go on a canoe trip with the Grads of 2011, especially when he found out that they were going to stop at the Hungry Bear for lunch on the way. His excitement quickly turned to fear though, when he learned that the Hungry Bear planned on having Bear B.U.M. for lunch.
Luckily the students helped save Bear B.U.M. from the Stupid Hungry Blue Bear and everyone became good friends.
After lunch, the students and Bear B.U.M. got into their canoes and had to paddle into the wind for several hours. It was very hard and Bear B.U.M. and the students were very tired after a long day paddling.
Bear B.U.M. was also quite hungry and kept bugging the students to make him dinner. He was getting pretty grouchy.
Later that night, after a wonderful meal of berries and cookies, Bear B.U.M. was surprised by an unexpected visitor, a coquettish little white bear. Bear B.U.M. was pretty excited to have found a special friend and he and the little white bear, whose name he never did learn, spent quite a bit of quality time together. Bear B.U.M. was a very, very, happy Bear.
The next day proved to be a short paddling day and Bear B.U.M. had time to help the students build an Inuksuk, or ᐃᓄᒃᓱᒃ.
He also engaged in some quality play time with the students. Bear B.U.M. was having a great time on this canoe trip.
On the third day, Mr. B. caught Bear B.U.M. in the canoe without a life-jacket. Mr. B., who is responsible for the safety of all the children, had to scold Bear B.U.M. and Bear B.U.M. was sad for the rest of the day.
Bear B.U.M. was so sad that he didn't even go swimming with the children later that day. Bear B.U.M. just sat on a rock and pouted while everyone else was having fun.
To make Bear B.U.M. feel better the children decided to show Bear B.U.M. their bare bums while swimming. This made Bear B.U.M. happy even though only one of the children showed a true bare bum because she had forgotten her bathing suit.
The next day the students and Bear B.U.M. headed for home with some great memories of a wonderful trip on the French River.

Bear B.U.M. goes to the Grand Canyon
Day #1: The first day was a very long drive, first through the border and finally ending at Fort Wayne, Indiana where Bear B.U.M. and Bobby got a hotel room, ate at the Outback, and went to bed early.
Day #2: The next day was also a long drive but it was made easier by a tour of the Anheuser-Busch plant while in St. Louis. Though Bear was underage and couldn't take the plant tour, Bobby enjoyed himself. Bobby took the 'Beer Masters Tour' which meant he got a free hat, free beer and a souvenir beer glass.
Alas, Bobby drank too much beer on the tour and had to make frequent stops on the way to Stanton, Missouri. Bear B.U.M. was not impressed with the slow pace of the quest to the Grand Canyon.
Day #3: The longest driving day so far on the quest to the Grand Canyon. First through Missouri, then into Oklahoma where Bear wanted to drive on the historic Route 66. At first, Bear got Bobby lost because he thought the 'finger' was pointing to the left. After driving in circles, always turning left to Route 66, Bear finally realized that the road sign was in the shape of the state and that indeed he was already on Route 66.
Bear B.U.M. and Bobby had lunch in Chelsea, a small town on the other side of this historic bridge.
After lunch the long journey continued through Oklahoma onto Amarillo, Texas where Bear B.U.M. and Bobby arrived in a rain storm and stayed the night at an old western hotel.
Bear loved the western style swing doors that lead to the washroom. Not much privacy but a lot of ambiance!
Day #4: After a quick breakfast Texas style, Bear B.U.M. and Bobby headed out to New Mexico.
Along the way, they stopped for lunch at an old Route 66 diner where Bears were allowed. Following lunch they drove onto Holbrook, Arizona. Though they drove through the Petrified Forest National Park, Bear was not impressed with the stone trees as he was too anxious to get to the Grand Canyon the next day.
Day #5: Finally, Bear B.U.M. had reached the Grand Canyon. Since Bobby had already been to the Grand Canyon, he decided to do something different and take a helicopter tour of the Canyon. Bear, who is really, really, afraid of flying decided to wait by the car.
After the helicopter flight, Bear B.U.M. and Bobby drove along the canyon rim where Bear finally got up the courage to climb a tree and look out over the Grand Canyon ridge.
Bear was so shaky because of his fear of heights that he managed to fall out of the tree and nearly over the edge of the canyon. Luckily Bobby was there is grab his silly Bear B.U.M.
After the near fall into the canyon, Bear B.U.M. and Bobby drove to Page, Arizona but were unable to find a room because the town was full of tourists. Bobby was not happy and he finally gave up and drove late into the night into Kanab, Utah.
Day #6: After a quick breakfast, Bear B.U.M. and Bobby left the Parry Lodge Hotel in Kanab and headed north. They were surprised to learn that the hotel they had stayed in had hosted many famous Hollywood people who stayed at the Hotel while filming westerns and other movies that utilized the unique landscape in the area. In fact both Planet of the Apes movies were shot in and around Kanab, known as Little Hollywood.
Heading north Bear B.U.M. and Bobby drove through the Bryce Canyon, finally arriving in Grand Junction, Colorado that night.
Day #7: Leaving early in the morning, Bear B.U.M. and Bobby drove through the Rocky Mountains on the way through Denver and onto North Platte, Nebraska. Though it was a long, tiring day, Bear B.U.M. and Bobby did have some time for site seeing along the way.
Day #8: The drive the next day was pretty boring as Bear B.U.M. and Bobby drove through Nebraska into Iowa where they stayed at Iowa80, the home of the largest truck stop in the World! Bear really loved the trucks!
Day #9: Homeward bound, Bear B.U.M. and Bobby drove through Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, the Canadian border and finally home late that night. All in all, 8000 km in 9 days!
A most epic Road Trip!

Bear B.U.M.'s First Canoe trip
It was Friday and Bear B.U.M. was excited. As soon as Bobby got off work, they were headed to Ralph Bice Lake to go canoeing for the weekend. Bear B.U.M. had never been canoeing before. In fact, Bear B.U.M. had never been in the forest before.
At 7 o'clock, after a very long drive, Bear B.U.M. finally was able to get into the canoe. He was a little afraid of all the water but he didn't want Bobby to know. He tried to look happy and wave as Bobby was bringing the last of the gear to the canoe.
Bear B.U.M. and Bobby arrived at their campsite very late. Bear B.U.M. had not seen much of the forest while caneoing since he was too afraid of the water and had hid in the bottom of the canoe. When they finally arrived at the camp site, Bear B.U.M. was so tired that he headed off to bed, missing a most spectacular moon.
The next day Bear B.U.M. and Bobby got up early and started breakfast. Bear B.U.M. didn't actually make breakfast, nor did he eat anything - he just enjoyed watching Bobby make breakfast. Actually, they didn't get up that early and breakfast turned out to be lunch.
After lunch, Bear B.U.M. lay on a rock while Bobby collected wood for the fire later that night. Bear B.U.M. was getting bored watching Bobby do all the work but he didn't want to get dirty so he stayed on the rock and watched.
After all the wood was collected, Bear B.U.M. decided that he should learn to do some 'bear' things. "I should try and climb a tree"' thought Bear B.U.M. After several attempts to climb, Bear B.U.M. finally made it up a tree and paused for several hours relaxing and enjoying the scenery. In point of fact, Bear B.U.M. didn't know how to climb down a tree and had to wait until Bobby rescued him.
After being rescued from the tree, Bear B.U.M. decided that he shouldn't do anymore 'bear' things and instead should just enjoy the warmth of the sun. Bear B.U.M. decided to relax and work on his tan for the rest of the day.
Later that night, after a wonderful supper of rice and chorizo, Bear B.U.M. climbed back onto his favourite perch as Bobby lit the evening fire. Bear B.U.M. loved staring into the fire and he could do so for hours on end.
Unfortunately, after only two hours, Bear B.U.M. was too tired to stay awake and Bobby had to put him to bed.
The next morning Bear B.U.M. and Bobby got up early and packed up to head home. Bear B.U.M. didn't do any packing - that was Bobby's job. Bear B.U.M. just made sure that nothing was forgotten - especially him!
Finally, at 11 o'clock, Bear B.U.M. and Bobby left their campsite behind. Bear B.U.M. was a little sad to leave but he sure missed his bed at home. Going home was a good thing, thought Bear B.U.M., as he waved a fond farewell to his first ever campsite.
At one of the portages, while Bobby was getting the canoe, Bear B.U.M. had a chance to talk to a frog who was on his way home as well. After spending some time chatting with the frog, Bear B.U.M. decided that he didn't like frogs and chased him away with a ferocious growl. Bear B.U.M. liked the way the frog hopped away as fast as it could. It felt good being a bear.
After several hours in the canoe, Bear B.U.M.'s first adventure was coming to an end. He could see the dock from which they had left two days ago. Bear B.U.M. was happy to get back to the car where there was air conditioning. After all, he was a civilized bear!
