Bear B.U.M.'s First Canoe trip

It was Friday and Bear B.U.M. was excited. As soon as Bobby got off work, they were headed to Ralph Bice Lake to go canoeing for the weekend. Bear B.U.M. had never been canoeing before. In fact, Bear B.U.M. had never been in the forest before.

At 7 o'clock, after a very long drive, Bear B.U.M. finally was able to get into the canoe. He was a little afraid of all the water but he didn't want Bobby to know. He tried to look happy and wave as Bobby was bringing the last of the gear to the canoe.

Bear B.U.M. and Bobby arrived at their campsite very late. Bear B.U.M. had not seen much of the forest while caneoing since he was too afraid of the water and had hid in the bottom of the canoe. When they finally arrived at the camp site, Bear B.U.M. was so tired that he headed off to bed, missing a most spectacular moon.

The next day Bear B.U.M. and Bobby got up early and started breakfast. Bear B.U.M. didn't actually make breakfast, nor did he eat anything - he just enjoyed watching Bobby make breakfast. Actually, they didn't get up that early and breakfast turned out to be lunch.

After lunch, Bear B.U.M. lay on a rock while Bobby collected wood for the fire later that night. Bear B.U.M. was getting bored watching Bobby do all the work but he didn't want to get dirty so he stayed on the rock and watched.

After all the wood was collected, Bear B.U.M. decided that he should learn to do some 'bear' things. "I should try and climb a tree"' thought Bear B.U.M. After several attempts to climb, Bear B.U.M. finally made it up a tree and paused for several hours relaxing and enjoying the scenery. In point of fact, Bear B.U.M. didn't know how to climb down a tree and had to wait until Bobby rescued him.

After being rescued from the tree, Bear B.U.M. decided that he shouldn't do anymore 'bear' things and instead should just enjoy the warmth of the sun. Bear B.U.M. decided to relax and work on his tan for the rest of the day.

Later that night, after a wonderful supper of rice and chorizo, Bear B.U.M. climbed back onto his favourite perch as Bobby lit the evening fire. Bear B.U.M. loved staring into the fire and he could do so for hours on end.

Unfortunately, after only two hours, Bear B.U.M. was too tired to stay awake and Bobby had to put him to bed.

The next morning Bear B.U.M. and Bobby got up early and packed up to head home. Bear B.U.M. didn't do any packing - that was Bobby's job. Bear B.U.M. just made sure that nothing was forgotten - especially him!

Finally, at 11 o'clock, Bear B.U.M. and Bobby left their campsite behind. Bear B.U.M. was a little sad to leave but he sure missed his bed at home. Going home was a good thing, thought Bear B.U.M., as he waved a fond farewell to his first ever campsite.

At one of the portages, while Bobby was getting the canoe, Bear B.U.M. had a chance to talk to a frog who was on his way home as well. After spending some time chatting with the frog, Bear B.U.M. decided that he didn't like frogs and chased him away with a ferocious growl. Bear B.U.M. liked the way the frog hopped away as fast as it could. It felt good being a bear.

After several hours in the canoe, Bear B.U.M.'s first adventure was coming to an end. He could see the dock from which they had left two days ago. Bear B.U.M. was happy to get back to the car where there was air conditioning. After all, he was a civilized bear!
